Day 9 – Mama Mia- a dodgy prawn and arriving in Scotland to a beautiful hotel

It was a dodgy prawn what done it. After a lovely day yesterday – the night finished with stomach pain and not much sleep. Luckily the day ahead was not one of the more challenging ones and Im now in Moffat, Scotland having completed 110km.

The dodgy prawn in the Italian restaurant caused stomach pains last night and then a general lack of energy today. Given how well I’ve been feeling – it was interesting to journey through today with fatigue from early on.

A real bonus was to meet and chat to a Cardiologist called Guy Furniss from Bristol who is completing LEJOG in just seven days. We cycled together for about 10 miles or so and it was a pleasure to speak with him. Guy was continuing to cycle on another 50 miles after we met to Edinburgh and was planning on well over 100 the next day to reach Lands End. Guy is cycling for the Disasters Relief Committee and its work in Ukraine

The journey was from the lovely town of Penrith – a very diverse and friendly town of many nationalities in the Lake District. Then on to Carlisle, then Gretna Green and then up to the town of Moffat. There were moments of beauty – but the real beauty of Scotland is a day or two ahead.

After two nights in very basic accomodation – I splashed out on a nice hotel in Moffat called “Moffat House”. It’s just been beautifully refurbished in a unique style and the owner (Carole) kindly showed me around. It’s one of those places that its sad to be at without Sarah. My stomach isn’t ready for the fantastic looking menu in the restaurant – but this is a hotel to visit in a really nice Scottish Borders town.

Tomorrow I’m hoping to feel a lot better because its time to get some serious miles going again – but lets see how my stomach feels tomorrow morning. Glasgow and beyond is in striking distance.

Steady on Dan, you’ve cycled to another country….massive achievement well done! Maybe some whisky could help with the prawn-tummy? Strength and honour. Rick PS – love the idea of a bloke from the Home Counties turning up in Glasgow on a flash bike…

    1. Hello Rick. One of the nice people at the Glasgow distillery that I popped into this afternoon suggested that I should try their flight of whisky because the 4 portions were only 50ml each and one in particular was quite light. Also – a biker I met at lunch suggested that the island hopping bike journey across some of the west coast islands is fantastic…

  2. So sorry to hear about the damn prawn!! But we’ll done for not letting it stop you cycling!
Lovely to see that you are now in Scotland. I’ve had my DNA back and I am 36% Scottish!!! My maternal Grandma was from Aberdeen area and they have pinpointed all around there! So clever! The main part is Lincolnshire! Then Denmark and Sweden a small percent. Will send it to the girls later! No surprises Dan except 1% Irish!!!
Safe riding! You are doing so well 👏👏
