Day one – Lands End to Padstow – welcome to test cricket

The day started a bit inauspiciously when I had to wheel my bike up a steep hill 30 metres from the start line. Amber signs were also flashing when I made a first wrong turn of the day before reaching Penzance.

Poor map reading cost me 15km today- and this is not territory to ride an additional 15km. Hertfordshire it is not. Steep valleys seemed to arrive in clusters to really make a point.

The weather was good. I met some nice people and my “why am I doing this?” level remained mainly low. Today also taught me to lose weight. I’m leaving a bag of excess gear at the hotel in Padstow…

Today was supposed to be 100miles to Bodmin. It ended up being 85 miles to Padstow. One benefit is I’m writing this blog in a very nice bistro rather than a fish and chip shop.

I’m looking forward to a gentle breeze down the camel valley for the first part of tomorrow too- but it gets hilly the other side of Bodmin.
