All the kit and caboodle for the journey

There are some lovely people that share their detailed thoughts on what you should take on the Lands End to John O Groats journey. For a detailed view on this – please visit the many excellent websites. This is a bit more of a list of things that didn’t quite go to plan and observations.

George with my new Varruu titanium touring bike.
  1. The bike – I’ve bought a lovely Varruu titanium touring bike. It rides really nicely. The challenge with the bike was delivery due to the global supply chain disruption which meant some of the bits didn’t turn up until shortly before I was due to go. The final problem to sort out were some power meter pedals that religiously squeaked on every turn – but the lovely guys at Kinetic Cycles in Welwyn sorted that out with days to spare. Thanks Keith and David.
  2. Covid – the late bike delivery didn’t really effect my preparation for the cycle. Covid did. The actual symptoms were really minor – but I had little energy for about 6 weeks which meant no cycling and then a maximum-attack, get ready quick couple of weeks before the departure. I say get your excuses in early.
  3. Something borrowed – My dad completed the LEJOG about 20 years ago. He has kindly lent me his Ortlieb panniers that have also cycled with him to Spain. Thanks Dad. If they work.
  4. A shirt and an electric shaver- lots of places ill stay will be quite relaxed B&Bs. I’m also planning to stay in a couple of nicer hotels and I’d feel out of place without a shirt and a shave. Not sure many of the LEJOG blogs recommend packing these. Although, its tempting to go a bit Castaway with Wilson on this trip too…
  5. Bike care and other stuff – The approach I’ve taken is to take what I fancy – not to worry about the weight too much – because my ride is going to be more Easy Rider than Tour de France.
